Nature conservation - Luxury lakes for frogs and amphibians on the Ohre in Wolmirstedt

Wolmirstedt - An excavator shows that work is underway. Three ponds are being created on the banks of the Ohre near Fabrikstraße to serve as spawning waters. They will be fed by the Ohre, provided it has sufficient water. But this is just the beginning.

The Kurt Lange Foundation has approved 120,000 euros to make the Ohre more natural and beautiful. In addition to the three spawning waters, the area between Amtsbrücke and Alter Elbe is to be redesigned.

Those responsible wanted to wait until the city festival because this area is located directly below the open-air stage. Now, however, the construction site is clear. Over the next two to three weeks, nettles, reeds and mud will be removed and gravel will then be laid. "Many fish populations need more gravel," explains Professor Volker Lüderitz, "trout and grayling, among others, need deadwood-gravel mixtures to spawn."

Once the silt has been removed and the gravel applied, tall perennials are planted on the banks. Swan flower, iris and meadowsweet are intended to displace the nettles permanently.

A private owner is also continuing work on the banks of the Ohre in Fabrikstraße and wants to create an attractive offer there. The former sugar factory is to be converted into a brewery. Work is also progressing there.
