Depending on local conditions, processed incinerator bottom ash (IBA) can be used as an unbound base course and frost protection layer under an impermeable surface course

Thanks to special processing methods, the IBA produced by our company has road construction approval and is included in the list of quality-monitored manufacturers and suppliers of aggregates and building material mixtures of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

IBA - a mineral building material

The material is processed incinerator bottom ash, or IBA for short, with a grain size of 0/32.

The processing of IBA takes place in a multi-stage process in which metallic raw materials and impurities are separated from the original mineral components using various screening techniques, non-ferrous metal separators and the use of magnets and air separators.

In addition to the highest possible recovery of metals from household waste incineration ash, the aim is to achieve mineral qualities at the end of the treatment process that enable IBA to be fully recycled.

After several intermediate storage stages, known as ageing, the IB ash is turned into a mineral building material that can be used optimally as an unbound base course and frost protection layer under water-impermeable surface courses.

    Components IBA before processing:

    • 30 - 80 % ash
    • 10 - 50 % glass/ceramics
    • 0 - 5 % metals
    • 0 - 25 % other
    • < 0.5 % unburned

    Preparation and storage

A batch of IBA 0/32, with a size of approx. 10,000 tons, goes through a total of three different processing steps.
In the first step, the material is de-scraped and temporarily stored for around six weeks. It is then processed in the first plant area in a multi-stage process using various techniques, temporarily stored and finally fed into the second plant area for processing. The various intermediate stages such as screening, Fe separation, crushing, air separation and non-ferrous separation are run through several times before the batch is stored for a total of 12 weeks.

      Quality monitoring

On the basis of various technical guidelines of the TL SoB-StB and the TL Gestein-STB, IB ash is subject to constant internal and external inspections. In order to be able to guarantee regular monitoring within our production process as quickly and efficiently as possible, we carry out our own monitoring in our in-house laboratory. External monitoring is carried out at regular intervals by Heiden Labor für Baustoff- und Umweltprüfung GmbH.
